It turns out that winged cats are an actual thing. There have been
extensively documented historical cases, with the earliest reported case attributed to none other than Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau writes about a female cat owned by one Mr. Gillian Baker, and describes the animal down to the colour of her fur. Truly the most disturbing part of his account is his mention that the cat's owners "gave me a pair of her 'wings,' which I keep still". Put the membrane down, Henry.
So, obviously, we started poking around looking for images of winged cats because, well, WINGED CATS. Here is a small collection curated by the LECKY, for your enjoyment. This bizarrely angelic mutation - apparently caused by a genetic skin disorder called
feline cutaneous asthenia - has spurred lots of special people to stick fake wings on their poor defenseless cats, either digitally or physically; sculpt gargoyles (of the New-Age Shoppe variety) and, most importantly,
get a tattoo.
Hooray!
